Brede mafana or Acmella oleracea, spilanthes is a flowering plant grown for leaves and flowers as vegetables. The name brede comes from the Portuguese "bredo" or "brette" from the Indian word which means leaf good to eat and the "mafana" in Malagasy means "hot" therefore good hot leaf to eat. Its flower in bud has a spicy peppery flavor, which gives the electrifying effect on the tongue, this is the reason for the hot word "mafana".
